William J. Cara

William Cara, Toronto Canada, is a private businessman. He has extensive executive experience in the Canadian securities industry, including co-founder/CEO of Qtrade Investor (in less than two years became Canada's largest independent online broker), founder and President of Security Traders International (Bahamas offshore trading broker introducing to HSBC), President of William Cara Investment Bancorp (registered dealer in Ontario), founder/CEO for Eastern Canada Operations of Canaccord Capital (Canada's largest non-bank-owned full-service broker-dealer), and broker and portfolio manager with Dominion Securities and Dominion Securities Investment Management (now RBC companies). Except for Security Traders International, all of them are/were Canadian securities industry registrants

In recent years, Mr. Cara was invited to make formal presentations by the Canadian Securities Administrators as an expert witness at a forum on electronic trading brokerage and by the Senate of Canada Banking Committee Task Force on the future of Canada's financial services industry. Previously, he was invited by the Government of Canada to do public speaking in three Far East countries together with Canada's senior trade commissioner. He was also a member of the Government of Ontario Task Force that reviewed the operations of the Canadian unlisted securities market, which is operated by the Toronto Exchange. He has organised the original computer committee of the Canadian Medical Association and co-authored the CMA Computer-Assisted Physician's Office Handbook. He has been contributing editor of the popular Money Letter and the Canadian Doctor journal. He was instrumental in the start-up of successful public companies like Genesis Microchip and Star Data.

Bill Cara has a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and serves as the Senior Financial Advisor to non-profit, non-governmental organisations committed to the United Nations Global Compact for Third World economic sustainability. He has been married to Patricia Cara since 1969, with a son William (1977) and daughter Stefanie (1981).


Mr. Cara was previously from July 1999, co-founder and CEO of Qtrade Investor Inc, a member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada, where he was registered as Responsible Person with all securities commissions in Canada except for Quebec. From April 1993 until July 1999, Mr. Cara was Founder and President of Security Traders International Ltd (trading and corporate finance), Toronto, ON and Nassau, Bahamas. From January 1988 until April 1993, Mr. Cara was Founder/President of William Cara Investment Bancorp Ltd (corporate finance Limited Market Dealer registered by the Ontario Securities Commission), Toronto, ON. From October 1986 until December 1987, Mr. Cara was Vice President (Canada), and founder and CEO for Eastern Canada Operations and Toronto Branch Manager of Canarim/Canaccord Capital, member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada. From January 1984 until October 1986, Mr. Cara was a Registered Representative and Senior Financial Consultant of Dean Witter Canada, member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada, Toronto, ON. From May 1983 until December 1983, Mr. Cara was Executive Vice President and Branch Manager of Housser & Co., member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada, Toronto, ON. From January 1981 until May 1983, Mr. Cara was Registered Representative and Financial Consultant at Dominion Securities Ltd, (now RBC Dominion Securities), member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada, and Portfolio Manager at Dominion Securities Investment Management Ltd., Toronto, ON. From mid-1972 through 1980, Mr. Cara was Founder and President of Health Care Management Systems Inc (a consulting firm), Toronto, ON. From 1969 through mid-1972, Mr. Cara was Senior Auditor at McDonald, Currie, Coopers & Lybrand (PriceWaterhouseCoopers), Toronto, ON, where he earned the professional designations Chartered Accountant and Certified Management Accountant. From May 1967 to December 1968, Mr. Cara was Junior Auditor at Thorne, Gunn, Helliwell & Christenson (KPMG), Toronto, ON. Mr. Cara was educated (1964 - 1967) at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfred Laurier University), Waterloo, ON, with a BBA (Honours), where he was awarded the Wall St. Journal Student Achievement Medal (top student in the Business School), and at McMaster University (1968 - 1971), Hamilton, ON, (night school) with a Masters Degree in Business Administration (Investment Finance).
